As you are getting older it is more important than ever to stay active, or to become active. There is really no good reason why growing older should go hand in hand with physical disability or deteriorating mental capacity. Both, the body and the brain can and should be trained on a regular basis. Plenty of research goes into the aging process and the findings speak for themselves:
Regular Physical Activity can push back the barriers of biological aging by as much as 15 to 20 years!!!! Just imagine this: a 60 year old person looking, feeling and behaving like a 40 year old. If this is no incentive to exercise then I don't know what is.
And here is another interesting fact: a group of 78 to 94 year olds were given a muscular strength training programme which lasted 8 weeks. All of the seniors improved their muscular strength during that time. The one who did best was the 94 year old. He improved his muscular strength by a massive 300%. This just goes to show that there is no reason why older adults shouldn't embark on fitness training.
However, Fitness Training for the Older Adult requires very specialist knowledge about the aging process of the human body. So, Teaching an older adult, may this be for Cardiovascular or Muscular Fitness, should be left to a YMCA Personal Trainer who is well qualified to give one-to-one tuition and who may also coach the older person in his/her own home or out of doors. Contact me Circuit training is a good form of training for seniors.
Even if the older adult should be chair bound, has had a Stroke or Hip Replacement or suffers with illnesses like Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Parkinson Disease, Hypertension, Fibromyalgia or a Bad Back there is usually a vast improvement in the person’s well being and their outlook in life. Often, hospitalization or moving into a home for the elderly can be postponed or even completely avoided through Regular Physical Exercise! As a Personal Trainer holding the Gayton GP Exercise Referral Certificate and a member of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REP) I have helped numerous clients to improve their health through physical exercise. Here are their comments.
When exercising, not every older adult needs a "softly softly" approach. I know of many people in their sixties and seventies who are fitter than someone in their forties and this is normally due to Regular Physical Exercise and a healthy diet.
